PHYSICS OF FAILURE MWD/LWD DEVELOPMENT TECHNIQUES
Our approach to MWD/LWD development focuses on increasing reliability through advanced failure analysis techniques.
It is Boreview's philosophy that downhole MWD/LWD systems failure analysis is a systematic examination of failed MWD/LWD components to determine the root cause of failure and use this information to improve downhole reliability.
Failure analysis for downhole MWD/LWD systems aims to:

Identify the failure modes (the way the product failed).

Identify the failure site (where the failure occurred).

Identify the failure mechanism (the physical phenomena involved in the failure).

Determine the root cause (the design, defect, or loads that led to failure).

Recommend failure prevention methods.
The process begins with non-destructive techniques and then proceeds to more destructive methods, allowing for the collection of unique data throughout the analysis. Using destructive techniques early can result in the loss of valuable information needed later. The recommended sequence of procedures is as follows:
ELECTRICAL TESTING
Measurement of all relevant electrical parameters is a critical part of systematic failure analysis. Proper electrical testing not only identifies the failure mode (catastrophic, functional, parametric, programming, or timing) but also helps locate the failure site. Electrical testing detects shorts, opens, parametric shifts, resistance changes, or other abnormal electrical behavior in components.
NON-DESTRUCTIVE EVALUATION (NDE)
NDE aims to provide as much information as possible on the failure site, mechanism, and root cause without causing damage to the MWD/LWD system. This is crucial when electronic components are still functioning.
